In order to thoroughly implement the spirit of the new semester safety work conference of Shandong University, strengthen laboratory safety management, enhance safety awareness, and effectively safeguard the lives and health of faculty members, staff and students, the Laboratory Centre recently conducted the laboratory safety inspection.
This inspection involved the Electricity Building (Office Building), No.5 Teaching Building, No.6 Teaching Building, the West Annex Building and other research laboratory areas, focusing on checking laboratory fire safety, electrical safety, equipment safety, the existence of illegal use of electricity and many other aspects. The relevant members of the laboratory centre carried out a comprehensive and detailed inspection to ensure that no safety loopholes were left.
Through the inspection, it was found that most of the laboratories are relatively standardised in management, in particular, they attach great importance to laboratory safety, the responsibility for safety can be implemented to specific persons, the measures are relatively comprehensive, and the safety of personnel and equipment can be effectively safeguarded. However, at the same time, some problems have been identified in the management of some laboratories, some of which are long-standing common problems, mainly:
(1) Power plugs are not fixed, and the phenomenon of temporarily pulling out power cords is very common. In some laboratories, the power plugs fall to the ground randomly and are not fixed, which can easily cause problems such as power cords dragging on the ground, tripping people, and leakage of electricity due to wear and tear on the exterior, resulting in potential risks such as personal electrocution and causing electrical fires.
(2) The laboratory environment is not tidy enough. Some of the laboratories are not well-maintained, for example: experimental rubbish are not cleaned up in time after doing experiments, the waste is thrown away randomly, the floor is not being cleaned up, the flammable tissues and paper packing boxes are very close to the equipment, and some laboratories are found to have the take-away packages, which may cause serious fire safety hazards.
(3) Laboratory items and equipment are not returned to their places in a timely manner after use. This not only affects the orderly management of the laboratory, but also easily leads to the loss or damage of laboratory supplies.
The laboratory centre put forward requirements for the existing problems, and the relevant laboratories paid great attention and made corresponding adjustments. Laboratory safety is an important part of the overall safety of the academy and also an important prerequisite for the construction and development of the discipline. It is hoped that through the regular laboratory safety inspection, the laboratory safety awareness will be improved, the responsibility of laboratory safety management will be enhanced. Meanwhile, it is also hoped that laboratory safety management system will be strictly maintained, so as to ensure the usage of the laboratory in a compliant manner. The Laboratory Centre will also provide relevant services as always, and at the same time do a good job of safety inspection and rectification supervision, and jointly improve the safety management level of the college laboratory, so as to do a good job of proactive support for talent cultivation, proactive support for scientific research, and for the transformation of scientific research results.
